Calamigos Ranch
The families of the characters played by Lauren London and Jonah Hill being quite well off, it was necessary to find a place to film the wedding rehearsal scene. Director Kenya Barris was able to have the doors to Calamigos Ranch opened to him. Opened in 1937 to offer a select clientele a place to relax and celebrate various events, this establishment has hosted all the actors of the You People cast. The interior scenes were shot in the main room, whose windows overlook an artificial waterfall of the most beautiful effect.
A fruitful collaboration
You People is the first feature film by Kenya Barris, the showrunner of the Black-ish series. His resume not having escaped Eddie Murphy when he decided to accept to turn under his direction, as he explained to Collider: “The shooting was easy. We had not one awkward moment. He’s super smart, and super talented, and being a showrunner – he’s been the showrunner on Black-ish, he’s done that –being a showrunner is as close as you can get to the director’s experience where you’re in charge of everything, and every decision, and all that. So he’s worked with actors, and worked with technical people, and had to do that dance. So it was cool, it was real easygoing..”
Carefully selected locations
You People ‘s location scouting gathered a large number of filming sites in and around Los Angeles. All of these places share several commonalities: indeed, each belongs in some way to the histories of the Jewish and African American communities. The Calamigos Ranch however appears more neutral. It is also for this reason that Kenya Barris chose to shoot the scene of Ezra and Amira’s wedding rehearsal here.
Two You People actors, Rhea Perlman and Jackie Swanson, appeared in the series Cheers.
