Burlington Arcade

Comics Cassandra Darke (2018)
The Burlington Arcade is one of London's most popular shopping arcades, located between Piccadilly and Vigo Street. One of the favorite places of Cassandra Darke, the cantankerous heroine of the eponymous comic strip by Posy Simmonds...

My ideal death would be a silent obliteration under a deep snow. (…) Of course, when the snow melts, I’ll end up ruining someone’s day.

Cassandra Darke’s macaroons

Cassandra Darke likes to go to the Burlington Arcade to buy macaroons. This old lady, not particularly sympathetic, rich and necessarily misanthropic, was born from the imagination of Posy Simmonds. A former newspaper cartoonist, this comic book author is popular for having given birth to Gemma Bovery and Tamara Drewe, two characters portrayed in movies by the same actress, Gemma Arterton.

Cassandra Darke, the female Scrooge

But it is difficult to imagine the British actress returning to lend her features to Cassandra Darke, this contemporary variation of Charles Dickens’ Scrooge. The pivotal point of a vitriolic urban mural, one of whose many qualities is to offer an original and daring insight into an entire city, highlighting places like the Burlington Arcade. A shopping mall not really like the others where it is easy to pulverize your budget. To buy macaroons, like Cassandra Darke, but also a multitude of objects, jewelry and other antiques.

Burlington Arcade

Burlington Arcade is one of London’s most popular shopping arcades.

From the moment it opened, Burlington Arcade offered mainly luxury items, such as gold and silverware. A sort of shrine opened on 20 March 1819, its architectural style was inspired by covered passages such as the Palais Royal in Paris. The Burlington Arcade has, in turn, encouraged other cities to create high-end shopping centres, such as Brussels with the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert or The Passage in Saint Petersburg.

The Passage has some forty shops spread over 179 metres, as well as sculptures by Benjamin Clemens. Partly destroyed by fire in 1836, visited by looters, the arcade was targeted during the bombings of the Second World War. When it was rebuilt, it was not long before it once again made its mark on a select clientele, even though anyone could stroll through it without necessarily buying anything.
