Bridge
The whole point of this sequence was to make the audience believe that the bridge Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) cross in episode 6 is in a remote area. Because in reality, the Engine Bridge is located at the exit of the town of Canmore, near Calgary. A metal building covered with snow at the time of shooting that the set designers and other digital effects specialists did not have to modify to allow it to shine on screen.
A link between two worlds
Craig Mazin set Episode 6 of the first season of The Last of Us in November 2021, using the Engine Bridge and other landscapes in the Canmore, Alberta area. A shooting made difficult by the climatic conditions. The latter nevertheless allowed the team to shoot in the snow, as required by the script.
A programmed end
If the immediate success of The Last of Us could tempt the showrunners to continue ad vitam eternam, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann were very clear on this point as Craig Mazin explained to Collider: “There’s not much point in writing a series designed to go on forever. The ending is everything to me. I don’t know how to write if I don’t know how the story will end. And if the show doesn’t have an ending, that means to me that nothing really makes sense.“
Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal were instructed not to play the video game The Last of Us prior to the shoot.
Canmore Engine Bridge
Built by the Canadian Railway Company in 1891, this metal bridge is one of the best known in Alberta.
The Engine Bridge in Canmore was built on the structure of an earlier building. Offering a breathtaking view of the mountains of Canmore Nordic Center Provincial Park and its often snow-capped mountains, it is located just outside the town of Canmore, among the trees.
