“- You’re a funny girl.
– What’s become of Agnes? Did she have her baby?
– I don’t know, I don’t take care of her anymore.
– You’re a funny boy.”
Angela (Anna Karina) and Alfred (Jean-Paul Belmondo)
At the beginning of A Woman is a Woman, Angela Récamier (Anna Karina) enters the café. His apartment is located just above this brewery.
This establishment, as its name indicates, is decorated with several portraits of Napoleon Bonaparte.
A baby within 24 hours
Angela is in a relationship with Emile (Jean-Claude Brialy). She would really like her partner to make a baby within twenty-four hours. But he is not at all in a hurry to have a child. She then gives him an ultimatum. If he doesn’t accept her proposal, she will go to his friend Alfred (Jean-Paul Belmondo) to have a baby with him. The latter is only waiting for this, he who is in love with the young woman.
During the shooting, Anna Karina, Angela’s interpreter, actually became pregnant, thus making her role a reality. At the time, the actress was married to the Franco-Swiss director.
A Woman is a Woman received two Silver Bears at the 1961 Berlinale. One for Anna Karina and the other for Jean-Luc Godard.
