As usual, Call of Duty introduces new maps in its titles. The opportunity for players to discover a specific location in the world and engage in a ruthless battle royale. If the market of Las Almas or the fortress of Al Bagra did not pose any problem for the studio Activision to put them in image, the Breenbergh Hotel was a beautiful imbroglio.
Development during the Covid
The development of the video game starts in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic. Usually, the teams in charge of the sets go on site and take advantage of this opportunity to locate the locations and ask for the necessary authorizations to use certain buildings in the graphics. The architecture of many buildings or monuments are protected by copyright. But for this occasion, the protocols were not respected to the letter, so that the fictitious Breenbergh Hotel is a little too well modelled on a real existing hotel.
The Conservatorium is unhappy
The Conservatorium Hotel in Amsterdam is a luxurious establishment where you can expect to pay an average of 800 euros per night. Comfort, luxury and prestige don’t really mix well with the violence and aggressiveness of Call of Duty games. And getting into a fight to the death in one of the most popular hotels in the Dutch city is not the best of advertisements.
As soon as the game was released in October 2022, the presence of the Conservatorium Hotel caused a stir. The management took offense at the treatment of the prestigious establishment, which appeared to be in flames and presented as a playground for many players ready to fight the enemy. “More generally, we don’t support games that seem to encourage the use of violence. The game in no way reflects our core values and we regret our apparent and unwanted involvement.” said hotel manager Roy Tomassen.

Threatened with lawsuits, Activision seemed to find an agreement with the establishment since the Breenbergh Hotel map is still available for players. From there to say that the studio can now sleep on its two ears …

Conservatorium Hotel
The Conservatorium Hotel is a five-star palace located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It is a luxurious hotel with a rich history.
In 1897, architect Daniël Knuttel was commissioned to build the Postbank building. The building was completed in 1901 and served as the institution’s offices until 1978. At that time, Postbank moved and the building remained empty for five years.
A revival occurred in 1983 when the Amsterdam Conservatory moved in. The music school remained within these walls for 25 years before moving to a new location near Amsterdam Central Station.
The building then found a new function when the company The Set Hotels bought the premises to transform them into a hotel. The hotel is strongly influenced by the history of the conservatory and is called the Conservatorium. The establishment wishes to maintain this link and hosts annual award ceremonies for the students of the jazz department.
