Blackmore University
Often favored by filmmakers of all stripes because of its lower costs, Montreal plays the role of New York in Scream 6. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett preferred to migrate north and ultimately shot only a few cutaway shots in Manhattan to create a believable illusion.
A faculty of fiction
Blackmore University does not exist. Created from scratch from McGill University, the university is home to Tara Carpenter, the character played by Jenna Ortega, and several of her friends. The filmmakers shot in front of the school, on campus and in some buildings. It is particularly here that the protagonists discuss the murders committed by the new Ghostface, multiplying theories about the identity of the killer.
New Montreal
Considerable modifications were required on some Montreal streets to create portions of Manhattan. Several stores have changed their name on Sherbrooke Street West. A fake subway entrance was even installed in place of the R Broadway Local transit service while Sherbrooke Street W and Wilson Avenue became Manhattan’s4th and 44th Streets.
Another killer in Manhattan
This is not the first time a slasher villain has caused trouble in Manhattan. Already in 1989 Jason Voorhees, the field hockey mask killer from the Friday the 13th franchise, was walking around, decimating poor people in Times Square and in the subway. Friday the 13th, Chapter VIII was actually filmed in New York and not in another city like Scream 6.
Scream 6 is the second Scream directed by the duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.
McGill University
Founded in 1821, McGill University is Canada’s oldest academic institution. It welcomes more than 40,000 students.
McGill University is created by James McGill, a fur trader who wanted to participate in the development of Montreal. Renowned worldwide, it offers various bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs in subjects such as law, arts, medicine, religion, science and agricultural and environmental sciences. Astrophysicist Hubert Reeves and writer Louise Abbott studied there. It has also hosted several film shoots.
