Bill and Frank's house
Episode 3 has left its mark on the fans. Telling the story of Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett) in a barricaded village, the script required a fairly large environment, involving not only the characters’ home but several others as well. While Bill and Frank’s home was built from scratch and the interior sequences were shot in a studio, the other buildings are from the Beachwood Estates area of High River, Alberta.
Renaissance
So the set crews moved into Beachwood Estates. Since the flood responsible for the total evacuation of the place, the houses have remained uninhabited. Perfect houses to recreate an apocalyptic environment in accordance with the specifications of The Last of Us. HBO’s craftsmen had plenty of time to put up a large fence around the houses, without having to brief the residents or cut off traffic.
Horror and emotion
Nick Offerman is the focus of episode 3. Known for having played the character of Ron Swanson in the comedy series Parks & Recreation, the comedian changes here radically register. Interviewed during the promotion of the series, the latter declared not without humor: “I am very happy to have been given this role. I’m also very surprised because showrunner Craig Mazin knows a lot of great actors. I guess they were all taken at that time so he had to fall back on me.“
Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, the two showrunners of the series, each directed an episode.
High River
It was in 2013, following a terrible flood, that the Beachwood neighborhood was evacuated. It has since been uninhabited.
More than 12,000 people lived in this residential neighborhood in the town of High River, about 30 minutes south of Calgary. Totally deserted, Beachwood Estates is now abandoned and consists of a macabre collection of houses and other dilapidated buildings.
