Beach
When Sam Fabelman (Gabriel LaBelle) finally agrees to film the spring party on Zuma Beach, he uses his new camera for the first time and returns to his first love, filmmaking. A decisive sequence filmed by Steven Spieberg on the beach where Charlton Heston once discovered the remains of the Statue of Liberty at the end of Planet of the Apes.
Tributes from a master
Steven Spielberg wanted to tell the story of his formative years in The Fabelmans. The opportunity to also pay tribute to two of the most important directors in his eyes: Cecil B. DeMille and John Ford. This last appearing in the last scene, under the features of David Lynch. The director of Jaws explained this to the New York Times: “I see the showman in myself that was C.B. DeMille, but I’ve always loved John Ford’s compositions. Ford was a hero of mine, , and I got such great instruction from him, I was only about 16 when I met him, and I didn’t know anything about his reputation, how surly and ornery he was and how he ate young studio executives for breakfast.“
A cinema beach
On Zuma Beach, Steven Spieberg no longer films a killer shark but a group of young people partying. Nevertheless, the most important thing is elsewhere, on the side of Sam Fabelman, his alter ego played on screen by Gabriel LaBelle. A character in whom Steven Spielberg literally projected himself to tell with great acuity and emotion his own youth.
The Fabelmans cost $40 million.
