“- Quite a place you’ve got here.
– The Emperor Constantine built it as a reservoir sixteen hundred years ago.
– Really?”

James Bond and Ali Kerim Bey

Curious about the activities of the USSR consulate, James Bond lets himself be led by his host, Ali Kerim Bey, into an underground passage.

The magnificent basilica cistern and its numerous columns offer 007 a unique show.

Ali Kerim Bey explains to him that he does his daily sport here, twice a day, rowing with his boat to discreetly spy on the consulate meetings.

A little further on, the two agents disembark and approach a periscope to spy on the meeting above them.

Basilica Cistern

Built in the time of Justinian (527-565), the basilica cistern is also nicknamed the “buried palace”.

Built to supply water to the Byzantine palace, the cistern passed under a basilica, hence its name, but of which nothing remains today.

With a capacity of 100,000 m3 of water over 140 m long and 70 m wide, the cistern also has 336 columns 9 m high.

With subdued light and background music, visitors enjoy a privileged setting for a breathtaking discovery.
