Bar Penalty Box

Novel The Cabin in the end of the world Paul Tremblay (2023)
The Penalty Box, a real bar in Boston, since closed, is the scene of a very important event in the story of Andrew, one of the main characters of The Cabin at the End of the World.

The Penalty Box was a field hockey fan’s hangout, a bar where the drinking was dry and avoided the ironic, trendy charm now associated with the term rade. On the corner of Causeway Street, across from North Station and the Boston Garden, the establishment was on the first floor of a two-story, rectangular brick building with no particular architectural distinction beyond its industrial style.

Paul Tremblay (The Cabin at the End of the World)

Andrew, one of the characters taken hostage in The Cabin at the End of the World , realizes that Redmond, one of the individuals responsible for his captivity, is the man who attacked him several years earlier. He then remembers the night at the Penalty Box, a bar in Boston, during which he was violently hit in the head with a beer bottle.

Far from the woods

This episode, very important in the narrative, takes place years before the events told in Paul Tremblay’s novel. This was an opportunity for him to mention the Penalty Box, an establishment in Boston’s West End now replaced by the Causeway Restaurant and Bar.

A math teacher in Hollywood

Paul Tremblay really began his career as a novelist while still a mathematics teacher. Currently on sabbatical, he is enjoying the benefits of his success, as his book, The Cabin at the End of the World, has been adapted into a movie by M. Night Shyamalan.

Counting among his fans a certain Stephen King, the writer was able to attend a part of the shooting, underlining the differences between his story and the script written by the director. The latter chose to depart from the novel halfway through, thus proposing a radically different ending.

The Cabin at the End of the World is Paul Tremblay’s third novel published in France after A Head Full of Ghosts and Survivor Song.

Causeway Boston

Former site of the Penalty Box, a sports bar, 65 Causeway Street in Boston is now home to Causeway Boston, another establishment.

The Causeway Restaurant and Bar is one of the most famous bars in Boston’s West End. It offers regional culinary specialties on two floors, a wide selection of beers and many signature cocktails. Frequented by sports fans, it broadcasts matches and organizes private and public events. Its opening, in the building of a former bar, the Penalty Box, encouraged the owners to carry out several renovations.
