Baliem Valley
Dispatched by three travelers wishing to fly over the mysterious Shangri-La Valley, the ancient name of the Baliem Valley, Bob Morane and his faithful mechanic friend Bill Ballantine, set off in the pilot’s B-25 Mitchell and head for an adventure that they have no idea will be breathtaking.
In reality, Lewis Broom, one of the passengers, has a completely different idea in mind than tourism. He wishes to seize the emeralds of the Negritos, a derogatory name for a Southeast Asian people. This intrepid life is not only the fruit of Henri Vernes’ fertile imagination, it also draws its origin from the writer’s own adventures.
A travel enthusiast and adventurer himself, the novelist listens to many myths and legends during his travels and brings back unusual objects, which decorate the walls of his apartment…
Henri Vernes wrote 230 novels of the Bob Morane series. Since 2012, Gilles Devindilis has been appointed to perpetuate his work.
Baliem Valley
Located on the Maoke Mountains, the Baliem Valley is a region of Papua New Guinea named after the river that runs through it.
On 80 kilometers long and 20 wide, the valley of Baliem is located at an altitude between one thousand and two thousand meters. The landscapes are sumptuous, oscillating between vast clearing, luxuriant forests and serpentine rivers.
It is mainly populated by Papuans of the Dani ethnic group. It is only in 1938 that a scientific expedition discovered this extraordinary agricultural population residing in this valley.
Today, the small Papuan villages welcome hikers curious to discover this picturesque and authentic scenery.
