Auditorium
Canada has a long history of making its infrastructure available to Hollywood studios. So much so that many films and series are no longer shot in the United States but in cities like Toronto and Vancouver. Director Nora Fingscheidt has set up her cameras in the latter to illustrate the story of Ruth Slater (Sandra Bullock), a young woman who is a former prisoner searching for her little sister.
Katherine (Aisling Franciosi), the little sister in question, plays the piano. As an adult when Ruth was released from prison, she performed at the Cornish Auditorium in Seattle, alone on stage at her piano. Instead of shooting in Jimi Hendrix’s hometown, the production wanted to use the beautiful Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. An infrastructure already used on television and in the cinema in works such as Legion or Upload. She performs Radiohead’s Everything in Its Right Place, whose haunting notes accompany the film’s denouement in a single breath.
The Unforgivable is the third film to use the Radiohead song Everything in Its Right Place after Vanilla Sky in 2001 and Veronika Decides to Die in 2009.
Chan Centre for the Performing Arts
Located on the UBC campus, this magnificent Chan Centre for the Performing Arts can accommodate up to 1200 spectators. It also includes a 160-seat movie theatre and a theater studio.
The Chan Center was made possible by a generous donation from businessmen Tom and Caleb Chan. It took two years to complete the project. The auditorium opened on May 11, 1997, at a cost of $25 million. The concert hall is particularly noteworthy because of its design for optimal sound reverberation. It is a true architectural masterpiece in which many established and up-and-coming artists perform throughout the years. The Chan Center, with its green façade, has also been a favourite with the cinema and television. It has been featured in Fringe, Stargate Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica and Legion.
