Auditorium
Rather than shoot the final scene of Metal Lords in a studio, director Peter Sollett chose to set up shop in Portland’s Revolution Hall, a former high school auditorium. Based in the state of Oregon, the production of this teenage comedy set to heavy metal music was shot entirely in the United States, in a majority of real locations.
If the group Skull Fucker, renamed at the last moment Skull Flower under the express request of the director of the school, was created especially for the film, the song that it interprets on the stage of the Revolution Hall, entitled Machinery Of Torment, was composed by a real rock star, namely Tom Morello, the guitarist of Rage Against The Machine. A song far from the usual standards of the musician, closer to the productions of Metallica or Judas Priest in a decidedly old school style. This fits with the songs used in the soundtrack, such as Metal Gods by Judas Priest, The Trooper by Iron Maider, For Whom The Bell Tolls and Whiplash by Metallica, War Pigs by Black Sabbath, Cowboys from Hell by Pandera or Overkill and Ace of Spades by Motörhead. Kirk Hammett, Scott Ian, Tom Morello and Rob Halford making a notable appearance on screen.
A total novice before starting the shoot, young Jaeden Martell had to learn the rudiments of the drums in just a few weeks. To do this, he took lessons from Glen Sobel, the drummer for Alice Cooper and the Hollywood Vampires, the supergroup that Alice Cooper formed with Joe Perry of Aerosmith and Johnny Depp.
Tom Morello composed Machinery of Torment, the main song of Metal Lords that the characters play.
Revolution Hall
The 850-seat Revolution Hall is located in a former high school, where it was the main auditorium.
Opened on April 17, 2015 with a concert by Neko Case, Revolution Hall retained the architectural features of the original building, such as the wooden seating. A roof deck, however, was added. Not far from the riverfront, it now hosts artists from all walks of life performing in styles as diverse as punk, metal, rock, reggae, jazz, country, pop or blues and hip-hop.
