I told you that because… because… I knew it would hurt you. I know you loved me, but sometimes you just need to hit it where you know it’s gonna hurt.

Martine (Audrey Tautou) talking to Xavier (Romain Duris)

Xavier (Romain Duris) comes back from Barcelona on purpose to talk with Martine (Audrey Tautou). They meet at the Soleil de la Butte to talk over a beer.

The young woman takes the lead and chooses to break up with her friend. They smile at each other. There is no animosity between them and they even hug each other. Xavier knows that this is the last time they will kiss.

It was while visiting his sister, an Erasmus student where she was living with other young Europeans, that Cédric Klapisch had the idea for “Spanish Apartment”. It was this motley mix that caught his attention.

As a result of the film, the expression “Spanish Apartment” has become commonplace to describe this form of shared accommodation between people from different cultures and countries.
