Attack of the T-Rex

Saga Jurassic Park
Movie Jurassic Park Steven Spielberg (1993)
The T-Rex attack was one of the most difficult to shoot for Steven Spielberg. A key sequence filmed not in Hawaii, like most of the other exterior shots, but on the mainland, inside the Stage 16 hangar of Warner Studios in Burbank.

“Keep absolutely still. Its vision is based on movement.”

Alan Grant (Sam Neill)

Steven Spielberg’s team had been in Hawaii for three weeks, where production of Jurassic Park had begun, when a terrible storm forced the director to stop work. Subjected to the whims of a difficult weather, the shooting often proves to be complicated. A particularly violent hurricane even destroys a large part of the scenery. Already installed in the Universal studios to film the interior scenes, Steven Spielberg must find a solution to wrap the attack of the T-Rex, first planned at the foot of Mount Wai’ale’ale, where the gates of the park were built. The enclosure was already built when the storm encouraged the director to rent the Stage 16 of Warner Studios in Burbank near Los Angeles to finally orchestrate the famous scene.

It is at night that the T-Rex goes into action, under the amazed eyes of the characters, hidden in cars with the colors of the park. Shooting in Los Angeles also provides additional comfort to the crew. Indeed, this one does not have to move the huge animatronic T-Rex designed by Stan Winson to Hawaii. The dinosaur is then placed in the shed. In the early 1990s, Stage 16 was the world’s highest filming complex. It is for this reason that the production asked Warner for permission even though the studio was never involved in the production of Jurassic Park.

The enclosure, with its gigantic fence, is rebuilt inside the building. Artificial rain is sprinkled on the vehicles and the scenery, which is more real than life. Between each shot, the technicians must climb high scaffolding to dry the T-Rex. On his side, Steven Spielberg manages, thanks to precise camera movements, to give the illusion that the sequence takes place outside when it was really filmed inside. Nevertheless, some shots are also made in the vast enclosed space of the Warner studios, in a kind of forest specially arranged for the shootings. A place through which the carts that tourists take when visiting the place still pass today.

One of the most iconic scenes in cinema, the dinosaur attack is characterized by the shot of the glass of water. The same one that the characters watch vibrate before they realize that an exceptionally large creature is approaching their position. An idea that Steven Spielberg had while listening to Earth, Wind and Fire at high volume in his car. So disco funk also had its role to play in the conception of Jurassic Park.

Warner Bros. Studios

Warner Bros. Studios is one of the largest and most iconic movie complexes in the world. A true city within a city, at the heart of the Hollywood dream machine.

Built in 1926 for First National Pictures, the Burbank studios were acquired by Warner Bros. in 1928. Today, the complex has nearly 35 sets spread over 25 hectares. Many films and series have been shot there, such as Back to the Future, Blade Runner, The Dark Knight, Jurassic Park, Friends, ER and The Big Bang Theory. It is possible to visit the studios with the Warner Bros Studio Tour Hollywood program. Definitely a must for any stay in the city of angels.
