Amphitheatre of the Arènes
November 29, 1972. The four members of Pink Floyd go to Poitiers for a concert at the Arènes. An unprecedented event for the inhabitants of the city of Poitiers, who are rarely used to seeing international stars arrive on their soil. It seems that the concert is also important for the band since a video report was even made and published on the official YouTube channel of the group in 2021.
In 1974, the group repeats the experience. While The Dark Side of the Moon is just released, the British want to give a series of concerts in France. Seven to be precise. While three dates are scheduled in Paris, to everyone’s surprise, Poitiers is one of the rare stops for Pink Floyd. On June 19, the group arrived with several tons of equipment, including huge light projections and dozens of loudspeakers whose vibrations still resonate in the hearts of the event’s spectators.
It was also an opportunity for many young people to get to know Poitiers. Due to the limited number of dates, many people from other regions rushed to Poitiers to get a front row seat for this exceptional concert.
At the time, an entrance ticket cost the modest sum of 26 francs, the equivalent of about 20 euros today. If the price seems derisory today, the price is consequent for the time. The concert is a success and very large sums of money pass into the hands of the impresario of the group. A case that did not go unnoticed. In 1976, the said manager was prosecuted for tax fraud at the Poitiers criminal court. The Dark Side of the Show.
According to estimates, more than 12,000 spectators flocked to see Pink Floyd at the Poitiers Arènes.
