Aircraft carrier

Saga Top Gun
Movie Top Gun : Maverick Joseph Kosinski (2022)
As with the first Top Gun, many scenes in Top Gun: Maverick take place on an aircraft carrier. Although the two ships used by Tony Scott in Top Gun have long since been dismantled, director Joseph Kosinski was able to count on the collaboration of the crew of the USS Abraham Lincoln to produce his sequences.

“They are your pilots. If anything happens to them, you’ll never forgive yourself.”

Penny (Jennifer Connelly)

The opening credits of Top Gun: Maverick take place on an aircraft carrier. The film then returns to the building at the launch of the mission at the center of the story, when the pilots must destroy a stockpile of enemy weaponry. It is on the USS Abraham Lincoln that the shooting takes place. Inaugurated in 1988, this aircraft carrier is perfect for providing a spectacular setting for Top Gun: Maverick. The entire crew is thrilled to be able to give Tom Cruise and his comrades the use of their warship.

It is also from the USS Abraham Lincoln that Tom Cruise and the other actors have the chance to perform takeoffs and landings during their training. The opportunity for the young actors to see Tom Cruise at work, an authentic pilot who could not fly his F-18 himself. All the actors were accompanied in the planes by professional pilots, whom the cameras had to “make invisible” during the shooting.

It was also on an aircraft carrier, the USS Midway, that one of the first screenings of Top Gun: Maverick took place. A party to which Tom Cruise went by helicopter, like a real hero, to the great joy of the crew members. The USS Midway is docked in San Diego, the birthplace of the great Top Gun saga.

Naval Station Everett

A nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln is part of the US Navy’s fleet of eleven giant aircraft carriers.

Adopting the name of the former President of the United States but also his motto, namely “Shall not perish”, the USS Abraham Lincoln was launched on February 13, 1988. Docked at Naval Station Everett in the State from Washington, he participated in humanitarian operations off the coast of Somalia but was also involved in the maneuvers that followed September 11, 2001. He appears in the film Stealth, in Tom Clancy’s book Debt of Honor and plays a big role in the plot of Top Gun: Maverick.
