Abandoned gas station
The crew took over the Priddis General Store in south Calgary to shoot much of Episode 3 of Season 1. The people in charge of the location scouting obtain the authorization to film in front of a small business located in the countryside. The building is largely made up to fit the specifications of The Last of Us. The walls are covered with vegetation and the roadway is largely modified to illustrate an advanced state of dilapidation. A sign like the one often found in front of churches in the United States is also placed in front of the gas pump.
Old school effects and digital imaging
The building was therefore largely modified thanks to computer graphics. So much so that it is difficult to recognize him on the screen. Changes needed to match the scenes inside. The making of the whole series involved old-fashioned special effects and digital effects.
A desire to stand out
Coming shortly after the end of The Walking Dead series, The Last of Us had to offer something different. The approach of the showrunners was also clear from the beginning, as Neil Druckmann pointed out: “We wanted to avoid making a zombie series.” A choice that involved many changes compared to the video game of which the series is the adaptation. Changes designed to allow the show to stand out without alienating fans of the video game franchise.
The Last of Us series is the third and only successful project to adapt the popular video game, following the development of a live-action feature film and an animated film project.
Priddis General Store
This store is located on the side of the road, in the town of Priddis in Alberta, Canada.
Typical of rural North America, this business functions as a grocery store, bazaar and gas station. It is therefore possible to refuel there before hitting the road. Located southwest of Calgary, it gained international fame thanks to the series The Last of Us on HBO.
