Felix Leiter (David Hedison)
Shortly before his wedding, Felix Leiter (David Hedison) is contacted by colleagues from the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) and the Coast Guard to help them catch Sanchez (Robert Davi), the world’s biggest drug dealer.
After a perilous stunt involving a helicopter and a plane, James Bond (Timothy Dalton) and his friend parachute to a landing right in front of The Basilica of St. James. Mary Star of the Sea. Just in time to celebrate the union of Della (Priscilla Barnes) and Felix.
The 1989 American writers’ strike disrupted the writing of the script. Richard Maibum, a long-time trade unionist, followed the strike while he was sketching the manuscript for Licence to Kill. Producer Michael G. Wilson completed the script.
The Basilica of St Mary Star of the Sea
The first Basilica of St Mary Star of the Sea was erected in 1852. Destroyed by arson in 1901, the present building was constructed shortly thereafter in 1904.
Following the fire of the all-wood church, this new place of worship was the first ever built without wood materials in all of South Florida.
Architect Brother Cornelius Otten drew inspiration for the design from Leone Battista Alberti’s San Francesco Church in Rimini, Italy.
Like much of Florida, the Basilica of St Mary Star of the Sea was severely damaged by the storm of September 8, 1919. Quickly restored, it is still a very popular place for its parishioners. Its stained glass windows, statues and furniture are particularly appreciated by visitors.
