“It’s the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man”

Raymond Stantz (Dan Aykroyd)

An advertising man seen earlier in the film on a packet of marshmallows or a giant sign, the Marshmallow Man owes its existence to Gozer.

The Sumerian deity that the four ghost hunters are trying to fight gives them a choice. The thing they’ll think about first will be the one that will destroy their world.

If Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) choose to think of nothing, Raymond Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) thinks, for a moment, of Marshmallow Man.

When Peter asks him why, Ray simply replies that he tried to think of “I tried to think of the most harmless thing. Something I loved from my childhood. Something that could never ever possibly destroy us. Mr. Stay Puft!”.

If in the film it is Raymond Stantz who invokes the creature, it is also Dan Aykroyd who designed it. He described it as “it seems harmless and puffy and cute—but given the right circumstances, everything can be turned black and become evil” For his design, the actor and screenwriter was inspired by the Michelin Bibendum as well as Pillsbury Doughboy.

That’s the size in feet of the Marshmallow Man in the movie! This height was calculated from the buildings that the Marshmallow Man crosses on its way.

Columbus Circle

Since 1892, the statue of Christopher Columbus has stood in place of Columbus Circle. Controversial as the figure was implicated in the “Amerindian genocide”, it was considered for a time to remove the effigy.

Finally, Mayor Bill de Blasio decided to add an explanatory plaque to the base.

In 2018, the New York State Board of Historic Preservation applied for its inclusion in the Register of Historic Monuments, thus preventing its future removal.
