Address The Lantern Tower of La Rochelle Rue sur les Murs, 17000 La Rochelle, France

Together with the Saint-Nicolas and Chaîne towers, the Lantern Tower was part of the defensive system of the city of La Rochelle from medieval times.

At 55 metres high, the Lantern Tower dominates the port of La Rochelle. As its name suggests, it served as a lighthouse for ships approaching the maritime city.

Listed as a historical monument in 1879, it housed guards and a machine inside allowed the “garrote” of the opponents’ cannons, i.e. to remove them from the gun ports. English, Spanish and Dutch prisoners were locked up there.

Its base is a cylinder of 25 metres in diameter and its octagonal spire makes it an original building.
