The first Basilica of St Mary Star of the Sea was erected in 1852. Destroyed by arson in 1901, the present building was constructed shortly thereafter in 1904.

Following the fire of the all-wood church, this new place of worship was the first ever built without wood materials in all of South Florida.
Architect Brother Cornelius Otten drew inspiration for the design from Leone Battista Alberti’s San Francesco Church in Rimini, Italy.
Like much of Florida, the Basilica of St Mary Star of the Sea was severely damaged by the storm of September 8, 1919. Quickly restored, it is still a very popular place for its parishioners. Its stained glass windows, statues and furniture are particularly appreciated by visitors.
