Maharana Sangram Singh II (1690-1734) refused his son, the future Jagat Singh II (1709-1751) to move to the Jagmandir Palace with his ladies. His father offered him to build his own palace on Lake Pichola.
This building, which he called Jag Niwas, was completed in 1743. Initially a simple addition among the many pavilions on the island, the palace was enlarged and turned into a hotel in the 1950s.
Since then, many personalities such as Lord Curzon, Vivien Leigh, Queen Elizabeth, the Shah of Iran, the King of Nepal and Jacqueline Kennedy have stayed there.
