Founded in 1744, Sotheby’s is one of the four oldest auction houses in the world.
In 1744, Samuel Baker sold several books and manuscripts belonging to John Stanley. In 1767, the same man joined forces with George Leigh.
Samuel Baker’s nephew John Sotheby took over the business in 1778 and expanded the auction house by specializing in the sale of prints, medals, coins and other antiques. Of course, books and manuscripts remain one of the company’s activities.
More than 240 years later, Sotheby’s is one of the world’s most sought-after auction houses, with sales reaching historic records.
Among its most significant sales, the Duchess of Windsor’s jewels were sold at 50 million books in 1987.
