Since 1670, Amsterdamers have been able to cross the Amstel thanks to the Magere Brug.
Initially built in painted wood, this bascule bridge allows to cross the Amstel. In Dutch, Magere Brug means “lean bridge” because originally the bridge was so narrow that two people could hardly cross it.
Rebuilt in 1871, it was however renovated in 1969 to allow vehicles to cross. This traffic was only allowed until 2003, the structure is now reserved for pedestrians and cyclists.
80 m long, it rises regularly to allow the passage of barges. Illuminated every evening by 1,200 lanterns, a concert is organized there every year on the occasion of the Liberation Day celebration on May 5.
