In addition to its function as city hall, the building also houses a former jail, a courtroom, a fire station, now a museum, and the archives of the San Pedro Bay Historical Society. The city is known for its strong Norwegian, Croatian and Maltese communities. San Pedro is also famous for having hosted the writer Charles Bukowski (1920-1994) during the last years of his life.
