Address Rue du Château 16510 Verteuil-sur-Charente, France

Built in 1080, the Château de Vertueil was occupied by the English during the Hundred Years War.

Demolished and rebuilt several times, this romantic-style castle has always belonged to the La Rochefoucauld family. During the Second World War, it sheltered French troops and refugees from Alsace-Lorraine. It also plays a role in the resistance effort. Classified as a historical monument on March 31, 1966, it was renovated by the architect Frantz Jourdain. A series of seven Unicorn Hunt tapestries were discovered, before being sold to John D. Rockefeller Jr.. They can now be seen in the Cloister Museum in New York.
