The rue de l’escale is the only one in the capital of Charente-Maritime that is still covered with round pebbles from the ballast of ships, used to stabilise them when their load was insufficient. Some of them come from the banks of the St. Lawrence in Canada, Scandinavia and England.
This street also has some very nice arcades on the ground floor of some houses, but also many private mansions.
