After the explosion of the Saint Jean d’Angély gunpowder factory in 1818, the city of Angoulême was chosen to establish the national gunpowder production four years later.
Located west of the city, it supplied the military fleet of Rochefort.
The power of the Charente River was used to drive 15 gunpowder mills.
The site is currently closed and not accessible to the public.
