The construction of the museum began in 1850. The building is in Gothic Revival style and was designed by the architects Thomas Newenham Deane and Benjamin Woodward.
Today the museum’s collection is divided into three sections: the Earth collections, the life collections and the archive collections. It also contains an amphitheater used by the university’s chemistry, zoology and mathematics departments.
The Pitt Rivers Museum is the only part of the Oxford University Museum of Natural History open to the public. It consists of 500,000 exhibits.
