Address Lacock Abbey Lacock, Chippenham SN15 2LG, UK

Founded in 1232, Lacock Abbey, also known as St. Mary of Lacock Abbey, was dissolved in 1539.

After its dissolution, the abbey was bought by a nobleman from the court of Henry VIII, William Sharington. The latter undertook to convert the monastic buildings into a family home.

In spite of his renovations, the owner still kept many structures such as the cloister, the boiler room and the sacristy. With no heirs, the estate reverted to his niece, Olive Talbot, and remained in the family for four centuries.

Matilda Talbot, their descendant, donated it to the National Trust in 1944, which has opened the site to the public since then.
