It is from this site that the United States Army launched its airships. Thereafter, the site was used primarily by the Army Reserve. Numerous training sessions were also held there. The base was used several times during the Cold War, before its closure in 1997.
Today, it is possible to visit a small museum dedicated to the history of the US Navy and to admire the old buildings and some aircraft. Many hangars remain abandoned. Some of them burned down during an arson attack in March 2020. Once coveted by Amazon, the site is now used for film shoots produced in Boston and the region.
