Address Grosse Horloge 7-1 Rue de la 17000 La Rochelle, France

The Grosse Horloge marked one of the entrances to the fortified city of La Rochelle.

When the first city wall was built, at the beginning of the 12th century, a gate was already built on the site of the current one. It allowed to separate the port from the city.

In 1478, the gate was topped by an octagonal bell tower, topped by a campanile housing the bell of the clock. Moreover, two passages were distinct: a small one for the pedestrians, a large one for the carriages. Then they were combined into one.

In 1746, the upper part was demolished and the building took its final shape.

Classified as a historical monument in 1978, a tramway even passed underneath for a short time.
