Address Église Notre-Dame de Royan 1 Av. des Congrès, 17200 Royan, France

The stunning modern-style Église Notre-Dame de Royan was inaugurated in 1958. It is widely regarded as one of the architectural masterpieces of the region.

Designed by architects Guillaume Gillet and Marc Hébrard, the Église Notre-Dame de Royan was built on the site of the former neo-Gothic sanctuary dating from 1874, which was destroyed during a bombing on January 5, 1945. Entirely made of rough concrete, this church has an elliptical nave of 45 meters long and 22 wide, where 2000 people can enter. The choir, which is also remarkable, stands out without a doubt. The 60-meter high bell tower, topped by a 6-meter high cross, gives the building a decidedly spectacular appearance. It was designed at the request of Max Brusset, the mayor of Royan at the time, to “straighten” the city’s silhouette and thus create a strong landmark visible from the ocean. The organ in the galleries, which took 20 years to design, is recognized as one of the most exceptional in the country. The church also houses the tomb of its principal architect Guillaume Gillet. Listed as a historical monument, it was restored in 2013 during an ambitious campaign.
