As the official heraldic authority for England, Wales, Northern Ireland and much of the Commonwealth, the College of Arms is responsible, among other things, for granting new coats of arms.
Founded in 1484, the purpose of the institution is to keep a detailed register of coats of arms, to grant new ones and to be an authority on all heraldic matters or matters of precedence in protocol in a large part of the British kingdom.
Since 1555, the College of Arms has been established on the same site. During the Great Fire of London in 1666, the original building was destroyed. A replacement building was quickly constructed.
When Queen Victoria Street was built, the south end of the property was remodeled and the building renovated to provide an entrance to the new lane.
