The developer William H. Reynolds hired William Van Alen in 1927 to build this gigantic building, which soon became the object of several modifications on the part of Walter Chrysler, the president of the automobile brand. He wanted the building, which was supposed to symbolize the power of his company, to be the tallest in the world.
At that time, New York was the scene of a fierce competition concerning the height of skyscrapers. With a spire of 58.4 meters, the Chrysler Building became the tallest building in the world in 1930, surpassing even the Eiffel Tower. Less than a year later, the Empire State Building, with its 381 meters, already took the title. But fortunately, its size is not the only reason to admire the Chrysler.
Its Art Deco style, the use of steel and in particular its eight eagle-shaped gargoyles give it a character that is as atypical as it is exciting, never denied to this day. This makes it one of the most beautiful and most photographed buildings in New York. A building as spectacular as its hall, entirely shaped with a mixture of granite, steel and marble.
For a long time, this was the only part of the building open to the public before the inauguration in 2021 of an observatory on the 61st floor. The Chrysler Building? A true legend.
