Address Château de Chantilly 60500 Chantilly, France

The current Château de Chantilly is a 19th century reconstruction of an older building.

In 1830, the Duke of Aumale, the penultimate son of King Louis-Philippe I, inherited the Chantilly estate. In 1875, Henri d’Orléans (1822-1897) undertook to rebuild the castle identically.

Originally built in 1358, the plans were kept and entrusted to the architect Honoré Daumet. After 10 years of work, the Duke of Aumale installed his collections in the sumptuous building.

Widowed and having lost his two sons, Henri d’Orléans decided to bequeath the estate and its collections to the Institut de France on the condition that it be turned into a museum, the Condé Museum.

Today, it is still possible to admire the second largest collection of ancient paintings, after the Louvre, the immense library and the private apartments of the duke.
