The Gauls settled on a small island in a marsh and founded their village. After the fall of the Roman Empire, farmers decided to exploit the surrounding land.
Between farming and the desire to build an abbey on these lands, some marshes near Charron were drained. This new topology allowed the construction of a fortress in 1360, on a strategic location between the entrance of the Sève river and the city of Marans.
Its location also allowed to control the grain supply of La Rochelle. Its various military and commercial qualities were one of the reasons why the Protestants took the city in 1562. Since then, the city has known many stories, the most recent of which dates back to 2010 when the Xynthia storm damaged many homes.
