The king of France, François I, used to come on these lands to hunt. It was at this time that the first castle of Nieuil was built.
Until the 19th century, many owners were able to enjoy the magnificent Charentais estate. In 1883, Count Guillaume-Guy de Dampierre had the present castle built entirely on the grounds of the old castle. The only remaining vestige is a tower, visible to the west. The same character made the vineyard of Brénanchie grow there.
Today the castle has been transformed into a hotel and has a restaurant called La Grange aux oies.
