Long before Versailles, the castle of La Roche Courbon was adorned with French gardens just as sumptuous. The former 15th century stronghold has given way to a superb 17th century residence with large windows.
The Revolution did its first damage to the place, which began a long sleep in 1817 when the estate was sold by the daughter of the Franco-Irish naval officer Jean-Baptiste Mac Nemara.
Thanks to Pierre Loti, the place found a new owner in 1920 who completely restored the place, bringing back the gardens and giving back to the castle its former beauty.
Classified as a historical monument in 1925 and 1946, the castle now welcomes visitors, wedding receptions and numerous shows.
