The Briarcliff Building first housed a psychiatric hospital called the Georgia Mental Health Institute. It could receive up to 141 patients and was in operation from 1965 to 1997 before being acquired by Emory University. This establishment is known thanks to some of its former students, including Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, the writer Salman Rushdie and the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Natasha Trethewey.
