The most deadly battle of Napoleon’s campaign in Russia, the Battle of Borodino, on September 7, 1812, has left an indelible mark on Russian memories. The French emperor preferred the battle of Moskova to designate it. It refers to the river flowing several kilometers from the village. Today, the village is home to a museum inaugurated in 1839 by Tsar Nicholas I, as well as numerous memorials and an Orthodox convent. In 1941, another battle took place here between the Soviet army and the troops of the Third Reich.
