The Gallo-Roman amphitheater of Saintes (also called arena of Saintes) is a site not to be missed during your visit of the city.
Saintes, formerly called Mediolanum during the Roman occupation, was probably the capital of the province of Great Aquitaine. As a result, many monuments were erected there. The amphitheater of Mediolanum is one of the earliest amphitheaters in Gaul.
Today, in spite of the disappearance of infrastructures, the vestiges of the amphitheater show a faithful image of what it could be in its glorious time.
If you come to visit the monument in autumn, you may be lucky enough to discover it flooded with water, creating a magnificent little pond in the middle of this grandiose site.
