Address Alcatraz Island San Francisco, CA, USA

Alcatraz Island has been the terror of many San Francisco criminals over the years. Today, it is closed to convicts, but not to tourists.

Built on an old fort, Alcatraz prison opened in 1934. A maximum security penitentiary, it became famous for having welcomed such luminaries of organized crime as Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly. Although everything was planned to avoid escapes, there were many attempts. In 1962, Frank Morris managed to escape. He was never found. The film Escape from Alcatraz, by Don Siegel, with Clint Eastwood, tells his story. Shortly thereafter, on March 21, 1963, the prison closed its doors.
