Enthroned on a limestone plateau 156 meters high, the Acropolis of Athens has alternately served as a religious sanctuary and a citadel. Holding a prominent place in mythology, the Acropolis is said to have seen the clash of Athena and Poseidon for control of Attica. The main building takes place on a site already inhabited in the Neolithic period. Research has confirmed that the Acropolis was born from the middle of the 13th century BC.
