Part of the hidden treasures of the city, this door inspired Honoré de Balzac to write part of the story of Lost Illusions. It was here that he decided to lodge Madame de Bargeton, a woman from the nobility. In the middle of the historic district, it is located next to the Jules Vernes College, and the Angoulême Museum dedicated to African and Oceanic art and archaeology. The door of 61 rue Mirage is curiously enough placed at the end of a narrow alley, itself separated from the street by a metal gate.
