426 ft long and 32 ft wide, the rue des Barres in Paris owes its name to an old place called “Les Barres”, first mentioned in 1152.
The mills on the Seine were scattered all over this place, which probably got its name from the medieval walls of Paris or from the barriers along the river.
At number 2, in 1250, a hotel was built, called Hôtel des Barres then Hôtel de Charny. It was destroyed in the 19th century to make way for the present building, which still preserves the front of an old bakery.
