Cabin
Since his debut, director-writer M. Night Shyamalan has remained loyal to Philadelphia, the city where he grew up. Nevertheless, if his fifteenth feature film, Knock at the Cabin, includes a few shots taken in the streets of the city, the majority of the action takes place in the woods, around and in an isolated cabin. A cabin that was built from scratch by the production team.
The cabin in the woods
Two versions of the cabin were built for Knock at the Cabin. The first one is the one you can see on the screen. It was built near Butterworths Bog Road in New Jersey. The second was built in a warehouse in the Philadelphia area, the exact address of which was kept secret. A way for M. Night Shyamalan to keep a control on the light for the sequences that take place inside.
Place of nightmare
Paul Tremblay, the novelist behind the story of Knock at the Cabin, was invited to visit the set. An experience about which he confided in the columns of the site Inverse: “They built two cabins. For exterior shots, there was a cabin in the woods somewhere just over the Pennsylvania–New Jersey line. And for the interior shots, they built a second cabin inside a warehouse. It was so stunningly beautiful that it hurt my New England heart. I was like, Man, so they’re just gonna tear this down. Can I take this cabin and put it on a lake somewhere in New England?“
Total control of fear
Paul Tremblay also had the opportunity to see for the first time what it was like to shoot: “It was explained to me that in the warehouse, they can better control the lighting instead of having to wait around for sunset or for dusk. I cannot tell you how realistic it was to be inside the cabin with lighting as if it were late afternoon. It was like my brain was being fooled. It felt like late afternoon but outside the window was just a concrete warehouse.“
M. Night Shyamalan was given a budget of 20 million dollars to make Knock at the Cabin.
Butterworths Bogs Road
Located in the countryside, southeast of Philadelphia, this road winds through the forest, not far from the 206 freeway.
South of the John Davison Rockefeller Memorial Highway, in the middle of the woods, the Butterworths Bog Road is located in a rural and uncrowded area. Attached to the town of Tabernacle in New Jersey, it offers one of the wildest walks, far from the center of Philadelphia, the nearest large city.
