Water Gardens of Dorne
Spain, land of filming
Spain is, after Northern Ireland, the country that the production has most exploited in the filming of Game of Thrones. The different directors have thus moved to different places along the Basque coast, in Girona, near the Mediterranean coast, not far from Saragossa or of course in Almeria and Seville.
Seville and the water gardens of Dorne
It is in this very touristic city that the teams of the location scouting have chosen the Alcazar, a formidable architectural ensemble registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The alcazar of Seville having become on screen the Water Gardens of Dorne. The water gardens are first revealed in season 5 when young Myrcella Baratheon (Nell Tiger Free) is sent to Dorne as a ward. The Mudejar Palace, one of the most famous parts of the gardens, was the location for the filming of the sequence in which Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) meets Prince Doran Martell (Alexander Siddig).
Game of Thrones has contributed greatly to a significant increase in visits to the Alcázar of Seville. A place already popular for having served as a backdrop for films such as Lawrence of Arabia, The Wind and the Lion, 1492: Conquest of Paradise and Night and Day.
The Water Gardens of Dorne appear in 3 episodes of season 5 of Game of Thrones.
Royal Alcázar of Seville
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, the Alcazar of Seville is a fortified palace built by the Umayyads of Spain.
The construction of the alcazar began in 844 on an ancient Roman site. Modified several times over the centuries, it has several palaces. In 844, the alcazar played a predominant role in repelling a Viking attack. Consisting of several parts such as the courtyard of the Dolls or the courtyard of the Demoiselles, the monument is still used today by the Spanish royal family. The alcazar was used as part of the filming of the Game of Thrones series where it houses certain scenes taking place in the Aquatic Gardens of Dorne.
