Palazzo Zenobio
After a short sequence near the Brooklyn Bridge, Madonna flies to Venice to the first notes of one of her biggest hits, Like a Virgin.
First on a gondola, swaying in purple pants and black dress, the singer passes by the Bridge of Sighs, St. Mark’s Square but also the Palazzo Zenobio.
There, in the centuries-old palace, Madonna reveals herself in a white wedding dress, uncovers an armchair, sits by a gigantic mirror, joins her lover, with whom she lies in a bed.
Accompanied by a man with a lion mask but also a real wild beast, the queen of pop dances lasciviously and transposes the calm and virtuous Venice into an erotic and explosive world.
Particularly controversial, the clip directed by Mary Lambert, later at the helm of Pet Sematary and Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge, quickly triggered the fury of conservatives and Catholic associations. They tried to have him boycotted. In vain, the admirers are far too numerous, carrying Madonna as a symbol of the liberated woman assuming perfectly her sexuality.
From the Brooklyn Bridge to Venice, Madonna covers 6681 kilometers in the clip.
Palazzo Ca' Zenobio
Built by the Zenobio family in 1690, the Palazzo Ca’ Zenobio in baroque style belonged to this lineage until the 19th century.
For 160 years the Zenobio family owned the Palazzo Ca’ Zenobio, but its history changed in 1850 when the Congregation of the Mekhitarist Fathers, an Armenian monastic order, decided to set up a college here. The premises still belong to this community. Unfortunately private, the Hall of Mirrors, used as a ballroom, is particularly sumptuous. Several of its panels represent mythological scenes of Zenobia, the rebel queen who defied Rome. It is said that she was one of the ancestors of the former owners.
